Moti Mehrotra was born and raised in a small city in Northern India of Lakhimpur Kheri. From early school years, she was the star in the Debate and Public Speaking competitions at the district level. Moti was one of the first women in Lakhimpur to have received a graduate degree – B.A. in English, Political Science, Hindi and Sanskrit and a Masters degree in Hindi. An advocate for having education be more widely available, she opened a small elementary school with just a couple of teachers and a few students. Today, that school is the oldest surviving school in Lakhimpur Kheri and has flourished into a full-fledged college providing Associate Degrees to thousands of students. Her love for education continues in her leading and formulating the teachings at the Sanatan Vidyalay program of SKN.
