Special Needs Community Outreach Program For Empowerment (SCOPE)

The mission of SCOPE (Special needs Community Outreach Program for Empowerment) is to support South Asian families of children with special needs through activities that educate, advocate, and empower.

SCOPE serves as a resource for health systems and the community to provide cultural competence resources to providers, and health and wellness related information to families.

If you would like more information or would like to join the support network, please send an email to: info@sknfoundation.org

Ongoing parent-to-parent mentoring facilitates mutual support and understanding which provides a safe space and introduces parents to others with similar challenges and needs.

A Parent Support Specialist connects families to needed resources through the Parent Empowerment Program designed to build self-advocacy skills and training for the first year of a new diagnosis.

Regular workshops and trainings address felt needs of parents of children with special needs (ex. IEP education, toilet training).

Inclusive social events provide safe spaces for children and families to socialize, to have fun and make friends in a judgment-free zone.

Our Story

How We Got Started

Shri Krishna Nidhi (SKN) Foundation is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to promote total wellness of the person and community through education. In various populations, including the South Asian diaspora, there are radical health disparities in access to care, service utilization and quality, and outcomes. Alongside evidence of chronic disease burdens in heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cancer, there is also a poorer understanding of disease prevention in culturally isolated community groups. Lifestyle modification and aggressive compliance with medical treatment is the key to a healthier lifestyle, leading to the prevention of many chronic illnesses. This is accomplished through limiting risk factor development through education.

How can I support my child with special needs in their education?

SKN Foundation recognizes that parents of special needs children face unique challenges in education. Their Parent Empowerment Program offers regular workshops and training sessions. These sessions cover topics such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which are personalized plans to address the specific needs of each child. Additionally, parents learn about toilet training techniques and other educational aspects relevant to special needs children. The goal is to empower parents with knowledge and skills to actively participate in their child’s education journey.

What should I do if my child with special needs faces social challenges?

Social challenges can be particularly daunting for special needs children. SKN Foundation’s SCOPE (Special Needs Community Outreach Program for Empowerment) steps in to support families. Through education, advocacy, and empowerment, SCOPE ensures that families are not alone in their journey. The program provides resources and activities to help children build social skills, connect with peers, and feel included. Families learn strategies to navigate social situations and create a supportive environment for their child.

What resources are available for families of children with special needs?

The Parent Empowerment Program goes beyond workshops. It connects families to needed resources during the critical first year after a new diagnosis. Families receive guidance on accessing services, understanding their child’s condition, and navigating the complex healthcare and educational systems. By building self-advocacy skills, parents become better equipped to support their child’s well-being. The program aims to create a strong support network for families facing similar challenges.

How can I maximize my special needs child’s potential?

The SCOPE (Special Needs Community Outreach Program for Empowerment) program is all about empowerment. It ensures that families are not isolated in their journey. SCOPE provides resources, workshops, and activities to help children with special needs reach their full potential. Families learn about adaptive strategies, therapies, and community engagement. By embracing and supporting these children, SCOPE helps them thrive and contribute to society.
